The proton is one of the two nucleons found in nuclei . It is a hadron , consisting of three quarks and therefore a baryon . Togehter with the neutron , the other nucleon, it is the only natural baryon.
The proton has an electric charge of +1. The numbers of protons inside a nucleus classify the atom as specific element . The simplest element, hydrogen, has only a single proton as a nucleus.
