Baryons are hadrons usually consisting of three quarks or three antiquarks . They have a characteristic spin of 1/2, 3/2, 5/2, etc. which classifies them as fermions .

The only baryons that appear naturally in our world are the proton and the neutron, the two particles that make up the nucleus of an atom . All other baryons have long ago decayed and can only be artificially made in accelerators .
