An atom is an electrically neutral composition of different particles. The fundamental fermions in an atom are the up and down quarks and the electron . The quarks are bound into nucleons trough the exchange of pions. Photons keep the electrons close to the nucleus.

Different atoms have different numbers of all these particles. It is the number of protons which classifies an atom as belonging to a certain element .
