Fermions are the group of particles that make up matter, in contrast to bosons which are energy transmitting particles. Fermions have a characteristic spin of 1/2, 3/2, 5/2, etc. Because of this they obey a principle called the Pauli exclusion principle which states that no two fermions can be in the exact same state.

The fermions were named after Enrico Fermi .

There are three subgroups of fermions: leptons , quarks , and baryons which are built up of quarks.
