In the standard model, different forces are explained as fermions exchanging bosons . There are four different forces:

-The color force , also called the strong force because it is the strongest of the forces, is responsible for keeping quarks confined in hadrons . Its exchange particle (boson) is the gluon .

-The electromagnetic force , usually called electric force, is among other things responsible for keeping electrons in an atom. Its exchange particle is the photon.

-The weak force changes the flavors of quarks and leptons. Its exchange particles are the W+, W- and the Z particles.

-The gravitational force is the weakest of all forces. Its exchange particle, already named graviton, has yet to be found.

Additionally there are two residual forces. These are forces which can act between neutral particles which are made up of charged particles.

-The residual color force, also called the residual strong force or nuclear force is the force which keeps nucleons inside a nucleus . Its exchange particles are mesons .

-The residual electric force is the force which binds atoms together in molecules. Its exchange particle is the photon.
